Adventure Travel Laos

Boat races in Luang Prabang Laos is where time almost stood still. For adventure travel, it is just great: lots of things to explore, without seeing the tourist masses you're used to in Thailand.

The democratic republic of Lao (Laos for short) is the most bombed country in the world. During the Vietnam war, the supply route through Laos was the target of many attacks.

When you wander off the beaten track, be sure not avoid areas where bombs may still lie around. That's not our idea of adventure travel.

Other than that, just take your time to visit this great country.

Luang Prabang

Not the capital of Laos, Luang Prabang is most certainly the most important city in Laos. It has lots of interesting temples, a nice hill in the middle of the old town, and great views over the mighty Mekong river. Vang Vieng Market

Although many tourists are coming to this city these days, it still is a great city with lots of quiet back streets and quiet temples. Or just take a bike or tuktuk out of town, to the hill tribes, waterfalls, or temples.

Vang Vieng

There are many beautiful places in Laos. But if you are searching for fellow backpackers, together with some great scenery and things to do, Vang Vieng is the place to be.

Situated on the banks of the river Nam Song, and with a backdrop of the most beautiful karst mountains (similar to those in Halong Bay or Yangshuo), it is easy to fall in love with this place. The only downside is that some of the tourists can get a bit too loud for this quiet village. Funeral procession in front of That LuangVientiane, the actual capital

of Laos is in fact one of the least interesting places in Laos. Being close to the border of Thailand, it has lots of influences from that country.

If you come from Thailand, Vientiane is a good place to start your journey through Laos. Visit a the Asian Arc the Triomphe and the golden That Luang. And have a look on the island in the Mekong river. There you can have a glimpse of the real Laos. If you like that, don't stay in VIentiane very long, but move on to the rest of Laos!

Adventure Travel offers in Laos

Laos is located in between Thailand and Vietnam. Their capitals, Hanoi and Bangkok, are easier hubs to reach than any place in Laos. Consequently, most of the tours to Laos start and end in one of the neighbouring countries.

GAP Adventures has a good choice of tours crossing Laos. Check out the combination tour with Cambodia.

Kumuka has an 11 day group tour including the southern islands and the main highlights.

Responsible Travel has a larger selection of tours, most of them run by local operators. Check out the 15 day tour, which shows all the highlights, including the Plain of Jars and the caves in Hinboun. Or this 16 day tour, including the 4000 island region in the South.

For more responsible options in Laos, including private tours or short trips, check out Responsible Travel's Overview of tours in Laos.
